January 2nd marks National Pet Travel Safety Day. It’s crucial to secure your pets in a carrier or with a harness and tether while driving. A loose pet in the car can turn into a dangerous projectile during an accident, even a minor one. In the event of a crash, your pet may escape, worsening the situation. Also, keep your pet in the backseat to avoid triggering airbags, which could be harmful, especially for larger animals.
Just like you prepare for your own travels, it’s important to pack for your pet too. Ensure you have essential supplies within easy reach, including food, water, bowls, poop bags or litter boxes, toys, treats, extra blankets, collars, leashes, and harnesses. Don’t forget an ID tag with up-to-date contact information. I recommend using GPS ID tags, or even better, microchipping. Unlike collars and harnesses, microchips are permanent, so your pet’s identification is always accessible.

January marks National Train Your Dog Month, an initiative introduced by the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) in January 2010. Its goal is to raise public awareness about the importance of proper dog training and socialization for a dog’s well-being. Many pets are adopted during the holidays, but unfortunately, some end up in shelters or abandoned soon after. Proper training can be the key factor in ensuring a dog remains in the home.
Building a sense of community is crucial, and knowing you’re not alone can be a great source of support. We suggest joining an online community (we may be a bit partial to the Kaylarie Gallerie Pet Portraiture Group). Connecting with fellow pet owners, sharing experiences, and exchanging advice can be incredibly valuable.
Training your dog isn’t just about teaching commands—it’s a chance to bond, create lasting memories, and spend quality time together. Dogs thrive on mental stimulation and the opportunity to learn new skills. Without it, they may develop undesirable behaviors like chewing on furniture or constant barking. If you’re unsure how to train your dog, or can’t make the time, consider working with a trusted trainer like K9 Parent Training

Today on National Chocolate Covered Anything Day, we wanted to issue a reminder that chocolate is toxic to dogs, cats and birds. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine which some animals can not metabolize. If ingested, your pet may show signs of hyperactivity, vomiting and diarrhea. If left untreated, the toxins will start to break down your pets nervous system causing muscle twitching, tremors, seizures, or even a heart attack or death. If your dog, cat, or bird ingests chocolate, please see a vet immediately.

Should you get a pet for Christmas? You may have heard some sweet stories of children getting a puppy or kitten as a gift. Or, you might have heard about how a gifted pet didn’t work out within a few months of the holiday. So let’s take a look as to why a pet might not be what you were expecting and what to consider before getting a pet.
First you need to decide what kind of pet you might be interested in. Cats, dogs, rabbits, reptiles and birds all have different care requirements. You need to consider what kind of habitat and enrichment is best for the pet and if that is something you can easily provide. Even different dog breeds can differ in activity levels. Research the breed thoroughly before making a decision. You might like the idea of an Australian Shepherd, for example but they are very active dogs that don’t fare well in apartment living. They need space to run and be fast. A difference in activity levels can cause an active dog to display some undesirable traits, like chewing on furniture. Or if you are a very active person and you have a very low energy pet, you might not bond as well as a pair with the same energy.
Pets can be a 10-20 year commitment and they are all different. So what should you do? You want to ask yourself the following questions:
1. Does the person you’re gifting the pet to want a pet and capable of caring for it?
2. What type of pet and what breed works well with the families lifestyle?
3. Are they ready for a lifelong commitment?
So should you get a pet for the holidays? If you can easily answer those 3 questions then I would say YES! At Kaylarie Gallerie we recommend teaming up with a reputable shelter or sanctuary like Desert Paws Sanctuary @desertpawssanctuary for a meet and greet. Follow them for more information!

What is rawhide?
Rawhide chews are a byproduct of the leather industry. Chews are made into various shapes and sizes from the inner layer of dried cow or horse hides. Some are then covered in flavoring. But they also can be potential choking hazards, cause digestive issues and expose your pet to harmful chemicals. Some rawhides are even made with rubber bands inside! Rawhide does not dissolve in your pets belly and can actually expand causing internal blockages.
Not all rawhides are the same. If you do choose a more natural rawhide option, supervise playtime closely to ensure they don’t ingest the toy. Now we also have lots of toy options for pets and many alternatives to chews. At the holiday times it might be tempting to buy your furbabies the cute holiday themed rawhides, but keep this information in mind. There are other options!

Happy Thanksgiving from Kaylarie Gallerie! Today we give thanks to all the wonderful animals that bless our lives! Check out our post from yesterday for a list of foods that are okay for your dogs and some to avoid. THANK YOU for following Kaylarie Gallerie Pet Portraiture.
11/27/24
Thanksgiving brings spreads of delicious food but how much of it is actually safe for your dog? As a rule of thumb you want to avoid salts and spice mixes that contain salt. Fat and turkey skin can cause digestive upsets, especially in smaller dogs. Turkey bones are known to splinter and can be very dangerous. No sweets, especially artificial sweeteners like Xylitol which can be fatal to dogs.
Plain, cooked turkey meat is an excellent form of protein. Plain, cooked pumpkin, yams and potatoes with no butter and no sweets like brown sugar or marshmallows are a good option. Plain cooked or raw greenbeans and carrots are good too! Always check with your vet if you are unsure about a certain food item!

Marvel is ready for Santa! We had the best photoshoot the other day and this sweet boy comes with his own set of wheels! “His name suits him well as he demonstrates a remarkable will to live. Marvel was discovered paralyzed with three open wounds on his hind end and was diagnosed with a fractured vertebrae. Despite his challenging situation, he remains a cheerful and lively dog who is eager to share his love and kisses with everyone around him. Marvel enjoys being cuddled and gets along well with both dogs and cats.” He is available for adoption through Desert Paws Sanctuary

Happy National Hiking Day! Ever since I was a little kid, my family and I would go for hikes! It’s a great way to get in touch with nature and even yourself! Be sure to wear appropriate shoes and bring food and water. If hiking with a furry companion, be sure to bring them water with bowl as well as a leash and poo bags. Remember to be aware of your surroundings and make safe choices. Most importantly, get up, get out there and have fun!

November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month! If you’ve been thinking about adding a four-legged-friend to your family, consider opening your home and your heart to an older dog or cat in need. Adopting a senior pet comes with some unique advantages. Grown pets don’t require the constant monitoring and training that puppies and kittens do and many are already housetrained! Consider adding a senior pet to your home because when you adopt a senior pet, you’re not only welcoming a lifetime of love into your home, you’re also saving a precious life. Pictured is my Princess, 14 years young!
11/12/24
November is Pet Diabetes Awareness Month. Pets with diabetes cannot produce or utilize insulin properly, preventing the conversion of food to energy. Without the conversion to energy, extra sugar left in the blood leads to lethargy and other health problems. Diabetes cannot be cured, but with proper treatment and monitoring your pet can live a long, happy life. If you suspect your furbaby might have diabetes, talk to your local vet today!

Pet Cancer Awareness Month is in November! It was created by the Animal Cancer Foundation in 2005. The month is acknowledged around the world and aims to bring awareness to cancer in pets. We are searching for more research to understand how cancer can affect both pets and humans. Some people prefer to bring awareness during the month by partaking in fundraiser walks and social media posts, while others prefer a more private celebration to honor their pets.

Nov 3rd-9th is National Shelter Appreciation Week! The Humane Society of the United States founded National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week in 1996 to acknowledge and appreciate the role of animal shelters in communities all over the country. This holiday encourages the public to understand the level of work involved in caring for animals and to volunteer to help at their local animal shelter. Thank you to all the shelters and volunteers here and around the Coachella Valley! We appreciate you!

Happy National Black Cat Day!
This is a photo of Horus! There are a lot of myths and superstitions surrounding black cats. A superstition is a belief or practice that is not based on reason or fact, and is often attributed to magic or fate. One superstition is that black cats are unlucky, but that couldn’t be further from the truth! If you’ve ever had a black cat in your life, you’d know they actually bring you luck
Let’s squash negative stereotypes this Halloween season! Adopt or foster a black cat today!

October 10th is World Mental Health Day!
Pets have a huge impact on our mental health. They can make us feel happier and healthier! After all, there’s a reason pets are considered part of the family!
Pets can make us feel loved by actually helping us release dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin. They also make us feel less lonely. As you might have seen during the lockdowns, adoption rates were up for a reason. There are multiple studies that say having a pet is good for your heart as it can lower blood pressure. Pets are also well known for helping to reduce stress and anxiety. Some people can even get emotional support animals! Pets can also encourage us to get outside and exercise more. Animals can also help us in reducing depression and PTSD. This mental health day, let’s thank the pets in our lives for helping support our mental health! Thank you Jasper!

National Walk Your Dog Week, which takes place during the first week of October every year, is all about getting out and about with your dog to improve both their mental and physical health. Too many dogs don’t have the outlet needed to stay physically and mentally fit. Sometimes this can result in behavioral issues such as aggression, destruction, and separation anxiety. We are finding that up to 40% of dogs are facing obesity also! Let’s use this week to develop healthy habits with our dogs! Just one 30 minute walk per day is said to meet national heart health recommendations for dogs. Not only will your dog be happier and healthier, you will too!

September 30th is National Pet Tricks Day! So how do you train your pet to do tricks?
My cat Jasper knows ‘sit’ and ‘outside’ very well! He’s working on stay, place and shake!
Use positive reinforcement, not punishment. Many dogs and cats will do tricks for treats!
Be consistent! Regular practice is the key to success.
Make it fun! Add high value treats like cheese or add their favorite toys. Make it a game!
Try a training service like K9 Parent Training in Palm Springs.
Sit. Stay. Celebrate National Pet Tricks Day!

Have you ever taken a snapshot and ended up with the red eye effect? Why does this happen? Scientifically speaking, when you are in a low light situation and a direct flash happens to your eyes relative to the optical axis of the camera, your pupils don’t have enough time to close. The flash speeds are a fraction of a second so the flash is actually reflecting off the fundus at the back of the eyeball and back out the pupil. It ends up being red because because of the blood in the choroid that nourishes the eye.
Simply speaking, it’s a reflection of the blood behind your eyes due to the bright flash and low ambient light.
This can be prevented in a number of ways. Bounce the flash off a nearby wall, ceiling, or even someone elses white t-shirt so the flash is not going directly into their pupils. Take photos without a flash if you can and add more ambient lights or lamps so the scene is not as dark. Some cameras and phones now have red eye reduction features built right in!

Deaf Dog Awareness Week this year is September 22-28th.
Signs your dog might be deaf or partially deaf:
1. Ignores loud noises like fireworks, dropping something heavy, or yelling.
2. Barks frequently, loudly or makes weird noises. Some dogs can’t hear themselves barking!
3. Ear pain or infections. Some dogs that suffer frequent ear trouble may have or develop hearing problems.
4. Is easily surprised. Dogs that don’t hear well may be surprised if you walk up to them quickly. They may even snap at you!
5. Genetics. Simply put, for some dogs, it’s the luck of the draw. Some breeds, like the Dalmatian, are more susceptible to being deaf.
6. Age. Some dogs start losing their hearing with age.
Deaf dogs face unique challenges and it takes some getting used to, but they are not much different from hearing dogs. Instead of verbal commands, your dog can use hand signals, visual cues and even your body language. Over time, just like parenting a hearing dog, caring for a differently “abled” dog can become second nature.
Share this information with your friends to spread the word about Deaf Dog Awareness Week!

September 4th is National Wildlife Day!
National wildlife day is dedicated to honoring Steve Irwin’s work and raising awareness for sanctuaries and preservation organizations, and promoting the importance of protecting endangered animals and their habitats.
We are lucky to be living in the desert where we have such a diverse array of wildlife. From reptiles, to big horn sheep, to arachnids, and even mountain lions, we definitely share this desert with a lot of critters! So today we reflect on the importance of protecting those animals and their habitats and we also want to say thank you to those who dedicate their lives to continue this work! Thank you!

September is Happy Cat Month!
Cat experts, cat wellness groups and expert veterinarians have come together to make this month about the health and wellbeing of our feline companions! There are a lot of myths and misconceptions about cats being the low maintenance counterpart to dogs. While their needs may be different, cats require just as much care and attention as any other pet. This month serves as a reminder that our cats need us as pet parents to support their physical and mental health. Check in with your cat regularly and team up with your local vet if you notice any negative or questionable changes in not only your cats physical wellbeing, but also if you notice any changes in behavior. Cats are notorious for hiding their pain so they may hide or become standoffish when not feeling their best. We are so lucky to live in a world with cats! If the cat distribution system has blessed you with a feline companion, or even if you just love cats, Happy Cat Month!
09/02/24
